New Genuine Student Requirement for Student Visa

New Genuine Student Requirement for Student Visa:

The Australian Government has replaced the GTE requirement with the GS requirement. These new requirements will take effect for student visa applications lodged on or after March 23, 2024. Please note that these new requirements will not apply to student visas lodged before March 23, 2024. The Department of Home Affairs will continue to assess these applications against the GTE Requirement.

The purpose of a student visa is for studying, and all applicants must genuinely intend to study. They must remain enrolled as students and demonstrate that studying in Australia is the primary purpose of their student visa. A student visa can be used to develop skills needed in Australia and to later apply for Permanent Residency.

Starting March 23, 2024, all applicants must demonstrate that they meet the genuine student criteria. Instead of writing a 300-word GTE statement in the application form or uploading a GTE statement, students will now be asked to provide answers to questions in the student visa application form. Answers should be written in English, with a maximum of 150 words per question.

  • Question 1 – Give details of the applicant’s current circumstances. This includes ties to family, community, employment, and economic circumstances.
  • Question 2: Explain why the applicant wishes to study this course in Australia with this education provider. This must also explain their understanding of the requirements of the intended course and studying and living in Australia.
  • Question 3: Explain how completing the course will be of benefit to the applicant.
  • Question 4: Give details of any other relevant information the applicant would like to include.

In addition to completing the responses in the application form, applicants must also attach supporting documents to their ImmiAccount. In the Genuine Student (GS) assessment, unsubstantiated statements hold little weight. Therefore, it's crucial for applicants to furnish evidence backing their claims. This ensures credibility and strengthens the success of their application.

For applicants with prior student visas or those applying within Australia on a non-student visa, an extra question is included in the application.

The Department of Home Affairs evaluates applicants' personal circumstances comprehensively, including prior study experience, duration of study, and educational institution attended. Furthermore, officers scrutinize the entire academic record in Australia, any study gaps exceeding two months within an academic year, and reasons for course changes. Additional factors such as current employment status, home country circumstances, and economic situation are also weighed to ensure compliance with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement for the student visa. This holistic assessment process aims to ascertain the applicant's genuine intent to study in Australia and their suitability for the visa.
