English Requirement Update - Subclass 500 and 485

Date: 21 March 2024   Author: Pankaj SHARMA (MARN: 2318344)

English Language Requirements Changes for Subclass 500 and TR 485:

The Australian Government has decided to increase the English Language requirement for two types of visas: the student visa subclass 500 and the Temporary Graduate Visa subclass 485. These changes were outlined in the Migration strategy released on December 11, 2023. Starting from March 23, 2024, these new requirements will apply to all visa applications submitted on or after that date.

English proficiency is essential for students in Australia as it facilitates effective communication, comprehension of lectures, and participation in discussions. It enhances academic performance, fosters social integration, and promotes cultural exchange. Proficient English skills also improve employment prospects and ensure students can navigate daily life effectively in an English-speaking environment. Students who are proficient in English find it easier to live independently in Australia and interact with the wider community. They can also grasp their workplace rights more effectively, which lowers the likelihood of being exploited.

New English Language Requirements for subclass 500 (Student Visa):

1. The applicant must undertake one of the following English Language tests:

  •  Cambridge English (CAE) (also known as Certificate in Advanced English)
  •  International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Occupational English Test (OET)
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE)
  • Test of English as a Foreogn Langauge internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)

2. The minimum score to enrol in an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) will increase from IELTS 4.5 to 5.0 (or equivalent).

3. The minimum test score for English proficiency needed for a student visa will rise from IELTS 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent).

4. Students in recognized university foundation or pathway programs providing reputable English language training need a score of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent). These programs will be listed on the Department of Home Affairs Australia website.

5. The applicant must have undertaken the test within the 2 year period immediately before the day on which the visa application is made or if evidence of the test is not provided at the time of the application - 2 year period immediately before on whoch a decision to grant or refuse to grant the visa is made.

For more information please read our studnet visa subclass 500 page.

For students studying English only through ELICOS, there will be no change.

New English Requirements for subclass 485 – Temporary Graduate Visa (TR)

1. The minimum English proficiency score for the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) is increasing from IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each test component (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). Equivalent scores in PTE will also be accepted. Please consult our registered migration agent to confirm if you meet the English requirement for the subclass 485 visa.

2. Holders of passports from Hong Kong and British National Overseas (BNO) are exempt from meeting the raised minimum English language requirement. The requirement for this group remains at IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent), with a minimum score of 5.0 in each test component (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).

3. The validity period for English language test results for all Temporary Graduate visa applications is reduced from three years to one year. In other words, the English exam results are valid for only 12 months for the purpose of the subclass 485 visa. Applicants must provide evidence that they completed an English Language test no more than one year before the date of the visa application.
